Prerequisites and Eligibility

• Age and Capacity: The applicant must be of sound mind and aged 18 years or above.
• Proof of Alternative Nationality: The applicant must possess concrete proof of foreign citizenship or an official, legally binding assurance from a foreign government (such as the Republic of the Philippines) that citizenship will be granted only upon the renunciation of their Kenyan status. This prevents the applicant from becoming stateless.

Required Documentation

Applicants must submit the following original documents and two (2) clear photocopies of each to the Consular Section:

• Form 5 Application: Two (2) copies of the duly completed and notarized Declaration of Renunciation of Citizenship form (initiated via eCitizen).
• Kenyan Passport: Original valid or expired Kenyan passport.
• Kenyan National ID Card: Original second-generation National ID card.
• Foreign Citizenship/Assurance Document: Valid foreign passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or an official letter of citizenship assurance from foreign immigration authorities.
• Passport Photographs: Two (2) recent, identical passport-sized colored photographs on a plain white background.
• Processing Fee: Non-refundable statutory fee paid through the designated consular payment channel.

Renunciation Process

Online Portal Submission

• Log in to the eCitizen portal (ecitizen.go.ke), navigate to the Immigration section, complete the electronic Form 5, upload the required credentials, and print the pre-filled application.

Consular Appointment and Surrender

• Present yourself at the Consular Section in the Philippines to execute the declaration before a consular officer. You must surrender your original Kenyan Passport and National ID Card at this time.

Registration and Certification

• The application is sent to the Cabinet Secretary in Nairobi for formal registration. Once approved, a Certificate of Renunciation of Kenyan Citizenship is issued, and the applicant's name is removed from the registry of citizens.

Legal Notice: Renunciation takes effect immediately upon the registration of Form 5 by the Ministry in Nairobi. Once registered, the individual loses all rights, privileges, and protections accorded to Kenyan citizens. Reacquisition of citizenship at a later date requires a separate, formal legal application.
